Amboseli National Park which lies in the shadows of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest mountain, is located about a four-hour drive (240 km or 150 miles) southeast of Nairobi. The park is 39,206 hectares (392 km2; 151 sq mi)[2] in size at the core of an 8,000 km2 (3,100 sq mi) ecosystem that spreads across the Kenya-Tanzania border. There are several entry gates to access the park. Using the correct gate during your trip to Amboseli can save you hours of additional driving. Below we have a list of the main gates at Amboseli along with basic information on which lodges and camps are closest to the various access points. As for entry and exit timings, the entry timing is 6.00am and exit timing is 6pm, after which the gates are closed. It may be possible to enter or exit beyond these timings in exceptional cases with the permission of the Park Warden, for example in case of a vehicle breakdown or maybe adverse weather causing road closures.
Amboseli National Park entry gates are well distributed at most convenient and popular places that lead to the park. If one chooses go to Amboseli by road, they can access the park on its 5 gates which are distributed to favour all guests entering the park at any point. When arriving by air, you will find gate services at amboseli airstrip. The airstrip is served daily to/from Nairobi by Air Kenya and Safarilink.
Kimana gate is located on the South-Eastern side of the park, just 5 minutes’ drive from the headquarters of the Kenya Wildlife Services (KWS) offices. It is the main gate and the most preferred because the road is very good it being located near the park headquarters.
Iremito gate is located in the Eastern part of Amboseli national park just at the border. It hosts the park authorities offices (KWS offices) The gate is well developed with more tourist facilities including clean flashing public toilets, information centre, ranger posts among others. The gate mainly serves
Meshanani gate is located in the North Western border of the Amboseli national park. It’s the closest gate from Namanga border when driving through Nairobi-Arusha road. Its very closed to the Lake Amboseli which is a key drainer of the park.
Kitirua gate is located on the South Western part of the park. Its remotely located in the semi-arid area with the clear views of Mt Kilimanjaro at close distance. It lies next to the famous Kitirua hill that is found at the border of the park in the South western part. You access the gate through Nairobi Namanga road. Its also mostly used by guests who come from Tanzania.
Flying Safari package to Amboseli are convenient due to the short 45 minutes flight versus the 4 to 5 hour road journey from Nairobi. Flights to Amboseli being readily available, a flying package safari is possible to book for most Camps and Lodges. Flying to the Amboseli is also recommended for those visitors who are short of time and want to enjoy game drives in Open sided safari vehicles.
